Happy 2019!

Happy new year!

I don’t really do the new year celebrations or that stuff anymore. Living in Israel – its really another day here and not so celebrated or acknowledged – (we all did it 4 months ago – “Shana Tova” – so its a little passe 4 months later…). But if I take myself back to my hometown- Sydney Australia – i’ll never forget that final countdown and watching those fireworks explode off the harbour bridge as the world began to usher in the new year. And while it may just be another day – we can choose to see it how we want. So  this year – I’m deciding to fly with it-  On the 1st day of the new year it’s a good time to start right? “And if not now – when?” –  So here we go…

Hi – I’m Tova Kramer – I’m a clinical dietician and have been working as one for the past 9 years. After a lot of soul searching and many clients (and 5 kids) – I’ve decided to launch my website (9 years coming – at least its not 10…) and blog and I hope you’ll come with me on this journey  – as we explore what healthy eating is, positive body image, feeling good about ourselves, and looking after ourselves – which is as far as I’ve seen, learnt and now am passing on is the key for a wholesome and awesome healthy life.

So being the new year 1-1-2019- we may as well celebrate new beginnings… I thought to start at the very beginning – BREAKFAST

We all know that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day- it helps our body get going, giving us the energy and nutrients we need and gets us ready to face the day.

Studies have shown that generally people who eat breakfast are thinner than those who don’t eat breakfast and what’s more most people who have lost weight have kept the weight off by eating breakfast every day. That could all be because eating foods with protein, good carbs and fiber in the morning keeps our appetites in check for the rest of the day and starting the day in right way will lead us to eat in the right way for lunch and dinner and snacks in-between.

Another reason could be is that if we do eat breakfast – then by the time we get to our mid morning snack or lunch –  we aren’t going to devour whatever we see- because having a proper meal for breakfast gives our body a signal that we are looking after it and filling it with what it needs – and therefore by the time we get to the next meal it can relax because it won’t be starving- rather hungry – and will be ready to eat again in a relaxed manner without eating too much thus setting the stage for moderate eating throughout the day.

In a nutshell as far as I’m concerned breakfast should be a cornerstone in your day and it’s definitely a great way to start the day!

Here is the recipe of how I started my day and year (with a hint of the Jewish new year as well) – It was delicious! Hope you enjoy it too!

Honey & Apple “Crumble” Oats


Half a cup of oats

A cup of milk or almond milk or half cup milk and half cup water

½ tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

¼ tsp ginger

Pinch salt

Half an apple

Some crushed up nuts

Greek yoghurt

Honey to drizzle

Boil the oats and milk up on the stove and let simmer for about 5 min.

Add the spices and cook for another 2 mins

Pour into a bowl and add half an apple cut up, a dollop of yoghurt, some crushed up nuts – i used walnuts and almonds

Drizzle honey/ maple syrup/ agave on top to your liking and sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon.

Enjoy! (with a cup of coffee of course!)
